An uncle who battered his three-year-old nephew to death for
wetting the bed faces life behind bars after being convicted of his
murder.
Ben Igbinedion flew into a rage after finding Daniel Evbuomwan had
soiled the sheets – leaving him with injuries ‘on the scale of a road
traffic accident’.
Daniel’s mother, Augustina, burst into tears as the guilty verdicts were read.
‘I am unable to sleep and, when I am able, I wake up in tears
because I can no longer see Daniel lying by my side,’ she said in a
statement released by police.
‘I cannot get over his death because of the bond we had.
‘He would look into my eyes and say “Mummy, how are you”?’
Daniel was sent from Nigeria by Augustina and his doctor father, Victor, to stay with his grandmother, the Old Bailey was told.
On
the night of the killing, the grandmother wanted to go to church, so
she took the boy to sleep over at Igbinedion and his wife Sandra’s home
in Bromley, south-east London.
Mrs Igbinedion went out to work a night shift as a nurse and when
she returned, Daniel was still in bed and there was no sign of her
husband.
She and her daughter tried to wake the youngster but found he was
not breathing. An ambulance was called but Daniel could not be saved.
Igbinedion – seen by his daughter changing Daniel and asking why he had
wet the bed – blamed his wife for the killing on March 1 this year but
his version of events was discounted by the jury.
The injuries inflicted by the 44-year-old – who will be sentenced
later – were the worst the pathologist in the case had seen. Det Ch Insp
Graeme Gwyn said: ‘His violent actions resulted in the death of a boy
who had no chance of defending himself.’
