People invited to contribute to emirate's autobiography by using hashtag #MyDubai
The story of a city told on social media.
It may well be a first for the world, virtual and real-time, and the #MyDubai initiative, announced on Sunday by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, is already taking shape and form – with the picture element offering dazzling vistas of the emirate.
Launched via Sheikh Hamdan’s Instagram and Twitter accounts, #MyDubai is open for all of the Emirate’s residents and visitors, the initiative encourages people to capture the real life dynamics of Dubai and share the most compelling moments they experience.
People are invited to contribute by using the hashtag #MyDubai, and will be able to introduce the unique values and culture of the Emirate to the world through social media, which has become one of the most important channels through which the world observes Dubai.
Commenting on the launch of the project, Sheikh Hamdan said the #MyDubai initiative will tell the real and human stories of the city through photographs and videos.
Sheikh Hamdan said that the main goal of the project was to show the world the beautiful lives, unique identity and true culture of the city that lie beneath the urban and technological advancements.
Sheikh Hamdan added, "In the fabric of Dubai there are more than 2.1 million stories – the individual lives and experiences of all those who call Dubai home. A city’s story is created by its people and as we look towards a prosperous future, it’s time to join together and show the world how 2.1 million people can create one remarkable story. Together we will create the world’s first autobiography of a city."
Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), the governmental body responsible for promoting Dubai’s leisure and business tourism offering around the world, has now committed to joining the campaign.
DTCM marked its commitment to the initiative by showcasing ten images posted with the #MyDubai hashtag since yesterday’s announcement, each of which highlight why Dubai is one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General, DTCM, said: “As Sheikh Hamdan stated on Sunday, the remarkable passion for Dubai that exists amongst both UAE nationals and the communities of more than 200 nationalities living in Dubai is an often untold part of the Emirate’s success.
his passion has been demonstrated in no uncertain terms with more than 25,000 images and videos uploaded to Instagram with the hashtag MyDubai just 12 hours after the project was launched by Sheikh Hamdan.
“The best marketers of a city are the people who live in it and through DTCM’s involvement in #MyDubai, it is our intention to showcase the best of the city by curating images, videos and stories of residents.”
A number of initiatives and programmes will be launched throughout the year of #MyDubai, giving further opportunities to take part.\
