Nightclub dancer burnt to death; lover cop held

A police constable has been arrested in Sri Lanka on suspicious of involvement in the burning to death of a woman nightclub dancer, local media reported.

The 36-year-old woman was found dead in her house in Kudamaduwa with burn injuries. She was living in a rented annex of a house with her six-year-old son.

She was a mother of three children from two marriages and had left the other two children with a relative.

Police said the dancer was not legally divorced and was carrying on an affair with a man. The arrested policeman had mediated and settled a quarrel between the man and the dancer but had himself begun an affair with the woman.

Police said the constable was a frequent visitor to the nightclub dancer’s house. On the day of the incident, he had come to her house with a food parcel just as she was about to leave home after keeping her with a neighbour.  It is suspected that a quarrel developed between the two.

A girl living in the neighbourhood saw the woman engulfed by flames screaming for help near a well behind her house, police said. Neighbours had also seen the policeman pouring a bucket of water over the woman after she had fallen on the ground.

When the neighbors were about to inform the police, the suspect, with burn injuiries on his hand, said he would get an ambulance and escaped on his motorcycle. The fleeing constable met with a road accident and was treated in a private hospital

Police found a photograph of the suspect in the nightclub dancer’s purse.
