A notification from a Dubai-based school about the
prolonged absence of four siblings led to their rescue from their
stepmother, who was allegedly torturing them. According to the Dubai
Police, one of the rescued Emirati children had burns on her hand,
allegedly inflicted by the stepmother to discipline her.
The Victim Care Department at the Rashidiya police station has
referred the four children to the Dubai Foundation for Women and
Children for rehabilitation.Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation at the Dubai Police, said the management of the school where the children study informed them that the four siblings were absent from school for over a month. They said they tried calling the children’s father, but he failed to answer or return their calls.
School officials told the police that they had noticed the burns on the girl’s hand and had even asked the father about it, but he reportedly told them that his wife was disciplining the girl when her hands got burnt. Police investigations revealed that it was not uncommon for the four children to remain absent from school.
The police questioned the father, who told them that the four children misbehaved with their stepmother and that they were “very arrogant”. The father said his wife disciplined them by preventing them from going to school.
“After it was revealed that the
atmosphere in which the children were being brought up was affecting
their physical and mental wellbeing, we rescued them and took them to
the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children,” Al Mansouri said.
The stepmother has been charged with assault, he said.
