The Senate on Wednesday urged member
countries of the Economic Community of West African States to adopt a
common currency, which would be a legal tender in all countries in the
sub region.
The upper chamber, through a motion by
the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to mark the 40th
anniversary of the sub regional body, also suggested the adoption of a
common visa for visitors travelling to any of the West African
countries.
It also called on the Federal Government to review the country’s foreign policies to ensure greater respect for the Nigeria.
The Senate, which lamented the poor
treatment that Nigeria was receiving from ECOWAS despite its financial
commitment to the body, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to insist on a
permanent position for the country in the sub regional institution.
Ekweremadu,
had while moving the debate, explained that Nigeria had made huge
sacrifices in terms of human and material resources to promote regional
integration, peace and stability by helping to resolve conflicts in
Liberia and Sierra Leone, among others.
“We acknowledge that ECOWAS has
successfully stamped out military rule and unconstitutional takeover of
power as well as gallantly weathered the storm of internal conflicts and
wars, terrorism, insurgency and other forms of social political
upheavals,” he said.
