Manchester United have confirmed that striker Wayne Rooney has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract.
The fine details of the player’s image rights deal were holding up negotiations, but they have now been overcome.
The contract is for five-and-a-half years, meaning Rooney will be nearly 34-years-old when the deal expires.
When it will be officially announced is not clear, with Manchester united travelling to london to play crystal oalace this weekend before a trip to Greece next week to play Olympiakos in the Champions League.
The reigning premier league champions will likely want to make a show of their success in convincing Rooney to remain at Old Trafford, and may opt to wait for a window of opportunity to maximise the publicity.
David Moyes today remained tight-lipped about claims that Rooney had signed the deal.
"As soon as we have the information to give you, we will give you it," Moyes said when asked about contract negotiations with the England striker.
The Scot added: "Everyone knows how important a player he is. He is a terrific football player and if we can get it done that will be great."
After repeated questioning about Rooney, Moyes said: "I'd only be repeating myself again (if I answered) your question."
Moyes was keener to talk about his side's trip to Crystal Palace this weekend as they begin a 12-game run-in to the end of the season, during which United face a tall order in reeling in the sides who stand above them in their chase for fourth spot –Everton , , Tottenham - and Liverpool who are 11 points ahead of them.
The
Rooney contract developments will provide a significant boost to their
run-in and bring an end to protracted speculation over a possible move
for the former Everton player, who Chealsea and Real madrid were understood to be keen on signing.
It also means Rooney is almost certain to become the club's all-time leading scorer. He currently lies fourth on 208, with bobby charlton 's 249 coming into clear view.
